How much do Facebook and Instagram ads cost for a small business?

Short answer: Facebook and Instagram ads have no fixed price. Meta runs an auction, you choose the budget, and Meta won’t spend more than 7 times your daily budget in a week. The number that really sets your budget is the cost of one result (a lead, a booking, a sale): Meta’s system needs about 50 results a week per ad set to learn, so a working budget is roughly 50 × your cost per result, per week.

Most “average Facebook ad cost” numbers online are global averages across every industry and country. They tell a Miami business very little. What helps more is understanding how Meta charges, and doing the budget math for your own numbers.

How Meta charges you

  • It’s an auction. Every time someone could see an ad, advertisers compete. The price changes with demand, the audience and how relevant your ad is.
  • You set a daily or lifetime budget. With a daily budget, Meta may spend up to 75% more than it on a busy day, but never more than 7 times your daily budget in a calendar week (Meta Business Help: About daily budgets).
  • You can stop at any time by pausing the ad. You may still get a bill afterwards, but only for what was spent before it stopped.
  • The ad account and payment are yours. Ad spend goes to Meta with your card; nobody needs to hold your money.

The rule that decides your budget: about 50 results a week

Meta’s delivery system learns who is likely to become a result for you. Until an ad set gets around 50 of those results in the week after launch (or after a big edit), it stays in the “learning phase”, and if it’s unlikely to get there Meta marks it “Learning limited” (Meta Business Help: About learning limited). So the useful question is not “what does a click cost” but “what does a result cost, and can I afford about 50 of them a week?”

If one result costs~50 results a weekAbout per month
$5 (e.g. a message or a sign-up)$250$1,090
$10$500$2,175
$20$1,000$4,350
$40 (e.g. a qualified lead)$2,000$8,700

Monthly figures use 4.35 weeks per month. The cost per result is yours to measure: it depends on your offer, your ads and your market. These rows are examples, not Miami averages.

Where small-business Meta accounts often go wrong

Many small businesses can’t fund 50 qualified leads a week, and that’s fine. The problem is when the budget is split across too many ad sets, audiences and campaigns, so none of them ever finishes learning and every result costs more than it should. Fitting the structure, the event Meta optimises for and the budget to what the business can actually afford is where fixing it starts.

After that, cost per result mostly comes down to:

  • The creative. On Meta, the image or video does most of the targeting, and it wears out: results drop when the same people see the same ad too often.
  • The offer. A specific reason to act now beats “contact us”.
  • Where the click lands. A slow or vague page wastes clicks you already paid for.
  • Tracking. If Meta can’t see which clicks became leads, it optimises for the wrong people.
  • Language. In Miami, it pays to write English and Spanish ads from scratch rather than translating one, so each version sounds natural.

Run it yourself or hire someone?

Boosting a post now and then is easy to do yourself. Running Meta ads as a steady source of leads is different: it needs new creative every few weeks, server-side tracking, and someone reading the results against your sales, not just likes. Meta or Google first?

Google Ads captures people already searching for what you sell, so clicks cost more but intent is high. In Miami that ranges from about $1.26 a click to over $245 depending on the industry (see the Miami data). Meta creates demand from people who weren’t searching yet, so results depend more on the creative and the offer. Many local businesses start with Google for the ready-to-buy searches and add Meta once tracking is in place.

What you pay on top: management

If you hire someone to run your Meta ads, that’s separate from ad spend. At PeakFlint, Meta Ads management starts at $900 a month plus a one-time $300 setup, covering up to $5,000 a month in ad spend; above that it’s 12–15% of spend. Three months to start, then month to month, and the ad account stays in your name. See how we run Meta Ads.

Common questions

Is there a minimum budget for Facebook and Instagram ads?

Meta sets small minimums that depend on your currency and what you optimise for. In practice the learning-phase math (about 50 results a week per ad set) matters far more: a budget that can’t produce about 50 results a week will keep the ad set in “Learning limited”.

Do I pay per click on Meta?

Usually not. Most Meta campaigns are charged on impressions (each time the ad is shown), while you optimise for a result such as a lead. What you should track is the cost per result, not the cost per click.

Facebook or Instagram?

Usually both in the same campaign. Meta places the ads where they perform, and you can see the results by placement and cut what doesn’t pay for itself.

Can you look at my current Meta ads?

Yes. We review ad accounts for free and send a written read on what we would change first. Ask for a review.
